Following a series of strokes in 1996, Nam June Paik relied heavily on Shigeko Kubota as his primary caregiver. Shigeko dedicated most of her time to managing his work and life. As a result, her ability to produce new work was impacted for the next decade. Her work became almost strictly biographical. During this period, Shigeko Kubota transitioned from artist to caregiver. While her own art production slowed considerably, Kubota played a pivotal role in organizing Paik’s work, most notably his monumental retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in 2000, titled *The Worlds of Nam June Paik*. This exhibition marked a significant milestone for Paik himself acknowledging her indispensable contributions: “Our poor Fluxus couple in New York made it to the Guggenheim. It was possible because Shigeko helped me.” This statement reflects the profound partnership they shared, underscoring Kubota's lasting impact on Paik's legacy.
