Kubota expressed her determination to live as an artist in New York in her scroll letter to Maciunas and called going to the United States “the biggest Happening.” She sent art materials for her work in advance in a trunk which she named “Fluxus Suitcase”. After arriving in New York with Shiomi in July 1964, Kubota received a welcome from Maciunas and others and began living in an apartment he had prepared for them in SoHo. Ay-O, Takako Saito, and Nam June Paik, who had come to New York earlier, lived nearby. While participating in the “dinner commune” proposed by Maciunas to take turns cooking, Kubota helped the production of Flux multiples by members and conceived and made Flux Napkins and Flux Medicine.
Only in the beginning, Kubota used a pseudo name of Love-ko AI which was given by Paik. At the Perpetual Flux Fest which was held a number of times from 1964 to 1965, Kubota participated in Eric Andersen’s Opus 45 and Yoko Ono’s Beat Piece as a performer. One of the prints Alison Knowles made for The Identical Lunch documents Kubota eating a tuna sandwich according to Knowles’ instruction. Although many members left New York in the late 1960s, Kubota stayed near Maciunas and continued helping him, for which he was grateful and called her “Fluxus Vice Chairman.” Kubota met composer David Behrman in 1965. In the following year, she began participating in performances by the Sonic Arts Union (SAU), which Behrman co-founded with Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier, and Gordon Mumma. In 1967, Kubota married Behrman and accompanied SAU’s tour in Europe along with the female partners of other members (Mary Ashley, Mary Lucier, Barbara Lloyd), occasionally performing in pieces through voice or walking with sensors on her hands. She also joined SAU’s 1969 tour in Northern Europe, England, Belgium, and Italy for some time.
